AI As Your New Wingman
We all have been facing the moment, where we wished for someone to make sense of our emotions and to show us our deepest desires, what we want, and what we need. Thanks to dating apps like Tinder, this dream has come true. With its recommendation system, harassment checking, and "smart photos" feature, Tinder is not only your modern wingman but a security guard at the same time. What could stand in the way of true love, right? But can we blindly trust a machine to present us with "the one" for us?
The Recommendation System
Tinder users rely on the app's suggestions to present them with their true love but don't even realize how precisely they are being analyzed by the algorithm behind it. Tinder's AI Algorithms analyze their swipes, interactions, and profile information to ultimately provide them with the best profiles based on behavior-based matching. Even though the exact algorithm used by Tinder is shielded and not publicly known to prevent user manipulation and protect the integrity of the service, Tinder has shared some general information about how the algorithm roughly works:
-
Profile Information: It is assumed that the algorithm analyzes the information provided on the user profile, such as pictures, likes and dislikes, jobs, education, and more. Moreover, the number of uploaded pictures and the completeness of the user profile can taken into account for the evaluation.
-
User behavior: Tinder analyzes the behavior of users on the platform. This includes swipe gestures (to the right for "Like" and to the left for "Dislike"), how often a user uses the app, how long they look at profiles, and whether they send messages.
-
Location: The location information is crucial to introduce users to potential matches in their geographical proximity. This allows users to get to know people in their area.
-
ELO score: It is believed that Tinder uses an ELO score or similar system to rate the attractiveness and "popularity" of users. Users who receive a lot of right swipes may have a higher ELO score, which in turn may increase their visibility to other users
-
News in profile: Updates in the user profile, such as adding new photos, changing interests, or updating profile information, can affect the presentation in the stack of potential matches. Fresh content could attract the attention of other users.

Harassment Checking
To ensure the users' safety and well-being on the app, Tinder introduced the "Harassment-Check", which is another part of AI within the app. Even though the exact algorithm is not publicly known, one can say with certainty that it detects and prevents harassment in the following ways:
-
Reporting feature: Users can report suspicious profiles or inappropriate messages. Reports submitted by users are manually reviewed by the security and support teams. Repeated reports against the same profile could be interpreted by the system as an indication of potential harassment.
-
Machine learning: Tinder likely uses machine learning to detect patterns of harassing behavior. The system may be trained on certain words, phrases, or behaviors that are classified as harassing. Through continuous training with new data, the system can improve its capabilities and respond to changing trends.
-
Image recognition: Tinder may use image recognition technologies to identify inappropriate images that violate platform policies. This could include nudity, violent content, or other inappropriate depictions. Such technologies may also help to detect and prevent fake profiles or the misuse of stolen images.
-
Behavioral analysis: The system analyzes the behavior of users on the platform. This includes assessing the frequency and context of messages, interaction with different profiles, and other activities. Deviations from typical, respectful behavior can serve as a warning signal and help to identify harassing behavior.
“Smart Photos” feature
This AI feature is supposed to maximize your chances of a match by identifying which photos are liked the most by your audience and which aren't. It is a way to A/B-Test your profile. The mechanism is simple, as it randomly rearranges the first picture that other users see when your profile is displayed on Tinder. Based on their reactions, swiping right or left, the photos are rearranged so that your "best" photo is displayed first. This feature is supposed to increase the chance of being macheted by 12%.
Now, that we know how effective and goal-driven Tinder works for every one of us, stop wasting any more time trying to figure yourself out and sign up with your modern matchmaker.
